Pharmacy Benefit Design
Studies in this area examine the impact of benefit designs, such as three-tiers and co-insurance, on pharmaceutical utilization, member calls, and use of other medical services. Results allow clients to anticipate the potential impact of various benefit design options and inform Express Scripts in the enhancement and development of benefit designs.

Pharmacoeconomics
Decisions about drug coverage require an understanding of both the clinical and economic impact of drug therapies. Pharmacoeconomic studies examine the cost-effectiveness of medications relative to alternative therapies. Findings inform formulary decisions as well as the development of other drug coverage strategies, such as step therapy.

Population Health and Pharmaceuticals
The availability of prescription claims data on more than 40 million individuals puts Express Scripts in a unique position to understand patterns of drug use among those with a prescription benefit. Understanding variations in drug use by age, gender, disease state, etc., informs numerous activities and audiences. For example, such information can reveal both under- and over-used medications, important changes in medication use over time, and benchmarks for comparison to other populations.

Program Evaluation
Clinical programs that aim to improve population health are evaluated on a regular basis. Information on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of these programs is used to inform the modification of current programs and the development of new clinical programs.

Tutorials
Express Scripts researchers write tutorials on various aspects of pharmacy benefit management as well as strategies for conducting research on pharmaceuticals.
